Hard to believe
Woken up to bed shaking Mr still asleep Realise it's a big one so give him a shove and run out to kids Two eldest in bunks, 4 and 6 Big bookcase right across from it Mr goes there I go in to MiniMissy's room She's still in her cot It's bouncing round like a scene from the exorcist She's unperturbed Shaking stops Settle kids and back to bed, to be woken regularly with aftershocks
Never imagined it was centred here Thought it was alpine fault
Spent a good week or so at home with the kids That's a blur of aftershocks and water boiling
Morning of #1's 7th birthday the Port Hills one pops MiniMissy's in the bath, scooped out of it, water sloshing over the sides Boys are under the table We join them That one was scary.
So long ago Things changed forever from that point on
What a ride its been, literally.

Just looking at the governments spending on earthquake response... they have only spent a little over 2 billion on the rebuild... the rest of the money has come from private insurers and EQC payments. Seems to me like they are dragging the chain, to leave labour in the shit like they do every other time they get voted out

Did we ever get told where all the money the rest of the population raised went? What it was used for?

Good point!
What still frustrates me to this day is how quickly the houses and roads in "good" suburbs were fixed. Fendalton Rd has some tiny bumps and cracks, and it was fixed within weeks, while suburbs in the east were inaccessible and without sanitation for months. The beautiful old houses in Merivale with toppled chimneys got new fireplaces, rooves, carpets and driveways. Ours both came down and we had a tarp on the roof for months. We have two huge holes in the carpet where hearths once were. Dusty rough concrete.
The tiles in the bathroom that cracked and necessitated full replacement in Jan 2011 were downscaled to ten replaced ones. You can't even get them, its an old house. They are on the wall still, cracked, with marker pen crosses on them, courtesy of Fletchers.
The fucked foundations requiring a total replacement and house lift were downscaled within three years to 15 to be replaced. Then 15 Jack n pack. Then "preexisting, we aren't touching them, sorry!" They are still busted.
Meanwhile, the homeowners who were first in line with minimal damage, depleted the coffers for those who had to wait for their seriously damaged homes to be assessed and repaired. Those who chose to fight have lost thousands in legal costs.
It's all wrong.
End of rant.

It is wrong - very wrong the way it has been handled. And I was led to believe the money raised by the people of NZ was for the people of Ch-ch. I bet none of you saw any of it eh?

To be fair, there's been the odd freebie for my kids A book Some other bits n pieces Some free bottled water early on A chemical loo People from overseas patrolling red zone There's free counselling and stuff (not accessed any though).
It's hard to know where the money came from. It would be nice to know eh.
The whoke response from government and council has been quite corrupt though, so who knows

Yeah it would have been good to have been given some info as to where it all went.

Did your insurance not cover you completely? Obviously not, but how come? Sorry if rhat is a dumb question.
To think they give 2 billion dollars in tax breaks per year to the wealthy. Disgusting

No We ran short on accommodation We had a $12000 budget I think, boom, all gone. 10 weeks for repairs became 12 then 16, then 6 months. When accommodation is nearly a grand a week it doesn't last long.

We still have bills to pay when we get the foundations fixed. It's probably cost us twenty grand this eq. I can cope with the debt (just a drop in the ocean!) but occasionally I get fucked off, especially about the carpet!
We are okay roof over our head food on the table Could be worse
