I just replied on fb to someone who asked me what is so dangerous a out patent extensions. The trade parts of the agreement is sound and good for most countries. The patent extensions of 12 years would hold TPP nations to ransom. Why it is even part of the agreement is a mystery because there is no beneficial trade to be made by adhering to it. An eg is In the U.S., Gilead Sciences initially priced a new patented drug that can cure Hepatitis C called Sovaldi. $1,000 per pill, or $84,000 for a treatment regimen. Consequently, the treatment has become a poster child of sorts in the increasingly contentious debate over the overall cost of prescription medicines and health care. Subsiding one treatment of Sovaldi wouldn't be realistic. If a generic drug could be sought, it could cost as little as $800 per treatment or $2 a pill. There is the danger we face. Giving drug corporations carte blanc over medicines would/could have disastrous consequences and is why Oxfam have joined the line of worried organizations. www.wsj.com/articles/BL-270B-1962
