A former vice-president of Massey University's Extramural Students' Society has been ordered to pay $18,000 after he "humiliated" the society's former president in a student magazine.
A dispute between former vice-president Dave Crampton and former president Jeannette Chapman in 2013 ended up before the Human Rights Review Tribunal after Crampton passed private details about Chapman to Massive Magazine, Massey's student publication.
In its decision published on July 29, the tribunal sided with Chapman's view that she had been "under siege" from Crampton, who sent her an average of 150 emails a week and "harassed" her at home in the evenings and weekends, forcing her to change her telephone numbers twice that year.

Chapman claimed that, on the day she was sworn in as president in January 2013, Crampton walked up to her, said "Nice suit", then poured a cup of coffee over her.
Crampton's behaviour became worse from that point, Chapman said. He phoned her repeatedly and emailed her to the point of "extreme harassment", often using profanities or making threats.
However, it was satisfied that Chapman had given a truthful account and, if anything, understated the degree of hostility. Crampton, on the other hand, conspicuously downplayed his own aggressive actions, it said.
It awarded Chapman $18,000 for the humiliation she suffered, and ordered Crampton to attend an "Introduction to the Privacy Act" workshop.
