A motorcyclist killed when a van u-turned in front of him escaped the Pike River mine disaster by less than an hour.
Shannon David Stewart, 40, from Christchurch, died following a collision with the Toyota Hiace van on Pound Rd, near Christchurch Airport on Sunday.
His wife, Tina Stewart, said it was another kick to the mining community he had been part of while working at the Pike River Mine on the West Coast.
On November 19, 2010, Stewart had left work at the mine at 3pm. A series of explosions about 40 minutes later killed 29 men inside.
"He was working that day but got out early because we had planned to go to Christchurch for a romantic weekend away," his wife said. "We got calls [about the explosion] as we were coming over [Arthur's] pass."
Her husband lost good friends that day, she said.
"There has been too much tragedy for them all."

Thats sad.... I know that girl too (his wife Tina).... she started with my old firm Markhams in one of our south Island branches just before I left.... I met her at our staff conference
She is a really nice young lady
