A man found dead in the Wairarapa Hospital car park drove himself there before having a heart attack, police believe.
The man died on Thursday night or early Friday morning, metres from the Masterton hospital's 24-hour accident and emergency entrance.
A doctor going home after a night shift found the man's body in the car next to his at about 8.30am on Friday, Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth said.
Police initially investigated the death as possibly suspicious. But an autopsy showed the man died of a heart attack and had a pre-existing heart condition, Bysouth said.
"We treated it with caution at the beginning ... but after the post-mortem it was clear there was nothing suspicious."
The man, who has not been named, was in his mid-30s, and lived in Masterton.
