A severe thunderstorm watch is in place for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, and Gisborne. Wind gusts of 110kmh and a small tornado are possible. There may also be heavy rain of 25mm per hour or more, which could cause flash flooding.
Galeforce winds were expected for much of the country, with severe southwesterly gusts of up to 120kmh Saturday night in Wellington and eastern Marlborough.
Heavy snow is expected to 300 metres in Fiordland, Southland, Otago, Dunedin, and Canterbury. The front would make its way to the North Island on Saturday evening, possibly bringing snowfall to the Rimutakas and Taihape.
Tornados hit Auckland on Saturday morning, ripping off roofs, smashing boats into sea walls, and twisting traffic lights around the wrong way. Properties were damaged but no injuries have been reported.
