To the somewhere close to the Gonville Tab in Wangas.... WW1 "Army Ordinance" has been located, and they are waiting until the experts in defusing these sorts of devices arrives from Wellington before they let people get back to their homes. No immediate threat apparently, just being cautious.

well.... I have just been out to investigate, and it appears that all of the police have gone... the roving reporter must have seen something shiny out of the corner of her eye, and wandered off back to her mates place... dinner is now over, and she is staying elsewhere for tea... I am hoping, her visit turns into a sleepover... it would be nice to be child free.......I really feel like running around naked tonight.

Guess I will have to wait for the morning paper to find out the rest of the story.

Police have cordoned off a section of Puriri Street between Abbot and York Streets after a resident discovered explosives on their property.

Senior Sergeant Andrew McDonald said Wanganui police received a call at about 1pm from the resident, who had found "two old mortars in a shed at a residential property".

After consultation with army bomb disposal units, police evacuated nearby houses.

They are now waiting for the bomb disposal unit to arrive from Wellington and "dispense of them safely", Mr McDonald said.

He asked for people to stay away from the area until the explosives could be taken away.

"There's no real risk to anybody. This is really about being extremely cautious with what we're dealing with."
