Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most famed examples of Gothic architecture. The building has seen has seen centuries of history and is a symbol of France.
Construction began in 1163 and wasn't completed until 1345. Since then, it has seen the coronations of Henry VI of England in 1431 and of Napoleon in 1804, as well as the beatification of Joan of Arc.
It was an essential food warehouse during the French Revolution, and was of course the setting of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Notre Dame attracts up to 13 million visitors every year, making it the most popular landmark in the French capital, even ahead of the Eiffel Tower.
The building is of course filled with invaluable artwork and sculptures. All moveable art and relics have reportedly been saved, but one iconic artwork may likely not survive - the cathedral's intricate stained glass windows, which its website calls "one of the great masterpieces of Christianity."

I'm not a religious person, but the stained glass windows are absolutely amazing, the architecture is awe inspiring....That was one building I really wanted to go see with my own eyes in person, such a sad day...Even though it wasn't the whole building, it's still such a great loss.

Awww so sad. I was hoping its not part of the yellow vest protestesting which has been happening for months in France. Apparently it hasn't been. Just a coincidence?
