Being as kawerau is the twin of flaxmere Hastings, I naturally thought the pub would be an identical twin of our flying jug, which come to think of it, isn't that bad. But good point. I wonder how the new proprietor got on when Weas left? |

the new manager
a woman
has managed to alienate
the entire patronage
she thinks she has to be hard
overcompensates
pisses everyone off
i had four pool teams
three netball teams
two darts teams
and a rugby league team
called us home
i had the biggest poker club (65 members)
in hawkes bay
(we had $5000 games)
i held Jackpot Joker comps
one paid a prize of 8k lol
the pub was packed
and the carpark was too
cops had to come down
to maintain order
no clubs there now
poker club died
pool teams gone to other pubs
she pushed for a restaurant
she got one
it loses $6k a month
i had the pub going full tit
9am till midnight 7 days a week
the hours now are 11am to 10pm
tuesday to saturday
i used to pick my battles
some things you cannot change
best you can do is manage
you have to immerse yourself
in the community
to do a job like that
and have the humility to listen
and act on other peoples advice
no room for pig headed
know it all

I kinda guessed you had things pumping there and always wondered when you handed in your resignation if the next manager would do as well as you. Now I know. It takes talent to rally people like that and make it fun and make money. They should have paid you 3 times as much.

they did offer me more money
and I told them the pub
couldnt afford it
my boss once asked me
what direction I thought
the tavern industry was going in
I told him to get rid
of every hospo business we had
and take the trust in a different direction
the risk/reward ratio
is all fucked up
margins are too tight
and the liquor compliance laws
make it a high risk business

kelly used to come into the

at the pub
(jump the fence)
empty all the ashtrays
grab the worthy butts
and roll one up
i used to watch him
on my cameras from home
cos id get the alert
couldnt figure out who it was
hoodie pulled low
he had a white bandage or wristband
or some shit around his
wrist
didnt take long until
i saw that wristband
and confronted him
he was shitting bricks
i said ease up brah
im not bovvered
because you clean up after yourself
and you are only about butts
not looking thru windows and testing doors
plus I like having eyes on the ground cuz
you probly see all kinds of shit
that time of nite
just dont get caught by the man
because it will just be a big fucken to do
why did i let you do it etc
he said cool
thereafter when he came in
at whatever time in the night
and played up for the camera
being a nutcase
cos he knew i was watching
his name was kelly
he was a bit simple
(is that sensitive enough?)
wonder if its the same guy?

A good understanding of human nature and intuition is that Weas. No wonder you ran a successful business.
I thought about you when the new people from overseas bought the flying jug. They rolled in without doing any due diligence and thought flashing up the pub and putting in a restaurant would make them money. They had no idea of the history or the locals and their likes. Needless to say they lost money. But they clawed it back when they sold the pub as the real estate prices were through the roof. The flying jug is now owned by the seventh day Adventists lol.

and money can be lost
at an alarming rate
biggest problem i see
in the pub game
is too many places
are 'exclusive'
they exclude people
based on appearance or background
i liked to run an
'inclusive' pub
example
Hawkes Bay publicans
dont like fruit pickers
theyre scruffy
english is not their first language
and they dont have bags of money
to chuck around
but
to me
they are bums on seats
people attract people
it doesnt matter if half
of them arent drinking
because anyone walking in who does want a drink
is more inclined to stay
and have one in a bar
with some buzz
walking into an empty bar
is soul destroying
and most peeps arent interested
they can drink alone at home
its also about the veto
the veto is when one person in a group
cant or wont go to a bar
for whatever reason
so the group picks somewhere else
if you can take away those reasons
then the whole group
is 'included'
your pub in Kawerau
got done up
and new standards applied
those standards probly excluded
most of their potential market
dress codes, rowdiness etc
i told thew trust
if they wanted to do food in flaxmere
they should either set up a KFC
or have a real cool display
hangi pit in the pub
it would be the only one in the country

The same happens down here with Trust anything they poke their nose in always turns to crap
the patrons go elsewhere hence the RSA club is flourishing
Most tradies gather at one tavern in particular & shearers & the like gather at another Tavern
There used to be a tavern in the middle of town it became known as the punchbowl
