I'd have to agree with you there. I well remember when the student loan thing was first started, there were lots of students getting the money and blowing it on whatever they liked. Nothing to do with school work. I would like to think it has tightened up somewhat by now.

I also agree....I know of a 'man' that got an 8k 'student' loan and no way in heck he would have studied anything about from how sticky the buds were....
I also know of a 'lady' that just keeps doing course after course so she doesn't have to go out to work, and what she studies isn't going to get her into work in a hurry.....
It really does need to be tightened up instead of many just taking the piss and abusing it....

When my son left for Australia, he had to pay the $800 on his student loan that he owed for the year 2015. On getting a job in Aus, he has made sure to have student loan repayments taken out regularly because if he comes back to NZ for a visit and goes back out of the country back to Australia, without having paid his student loan, they will pick it up the airport and wouldn't let him back out of the country. So that avenue has been closed.
They need to stop offering student loans to non NZ born citizens. And yes, there are a few courses out there not worthy of government assistance.

I was a professional student for a while... did NZCE electrical engineering, then did a bachelor of business and a post graduate diploma in professional accounting... passed everything with top marks..... now I am a semiretired cowboy builder Now they only let you borrow for 4 years... its a bastard for young people finding themselves now.... they should give us free tertiary and let us study as much as we want.... society will benefit from having lots of people qualified in lots of areas. All those current wankers in parliament got free education

There is talk about interest being added to student loans here in NZ. That would be disastrous and don't think government officials won't see that as an opportunity to privatize the student loan system in future.
They have done it in the USA. The government has sold student loan debt to private companies who now collect student loan repayments. With interest added to the initial loans, a large portion of ex and current students have no way of repaying the initial debt with interest added. They are witch hunted and threatened with no why forward. If you owe a student loan in the USA, even if you apply for bankruptcy, the student loan is not wiped like it is here in NZ. It has turned into a money grubbing opportunity for private collection contractors. Here's hoping this doesn't happen here.

Sure is Maddy. There is now a whole USA generation, Gen Y, who are at the behest of private student loan collection contractors that have defaulted on their loan repayments and have bad credit with no chance of owning a home or even getting credit.
This will be a threat to the future of banking because who in the future, are the banks going to loan to when a large portion of society have bad credit.

They already charge interest, the current rate is around 4%... the labour government changed it so your interest was written off if you earnt under a certain limit, then they changed it again so it was written off as long as you remained in NZ when owing money.... so still being charged, just given back to you if you remain in NZ.

I'd completely forgotten about this as my student loan interest is always written off each year due to my annual earnings.
