Sounds like he was murdered, seeing there is now a homicide in force now.

ive spent much time in waitarere as it is Levins Beach my folks had a holiday bach there since the seventies only sold it recently
in my adult life i have spent months at a a time out there enjoying the solitude of its windswept isolation den mother and i have spent countless hours in the forests and the sand dunes there
there are magic mushrooms in the dunes and the wreck of the hydrabad (first iron ship to wreck in nz)
so sad that the young man had to die alone in such a desolate and lonely place
its heartbreaking disappearing into the beach

I also spent many an hour as a kid playing on the Hydrabad. I don't suppose there is much left of it now.

I don't suppose there is much left of it now. its pushed hard up against the dunes maybe only a foot or two exposed when we were kids it was just above the high tide mark and about 40 feet exposed when my dad was younger they could jump off it into the water i have a chunk of it in my collection

It sounds like they discovered a real gruesome sight. According to RNZ News this morning he was removed in 'two' body bags and there was a sledge hammer near him.

I remember it being on its side and there was a fair bit of it to climb over and jump from. We were only there at low tide cos we used to drive down most of the way. Lucky you having a piece of it.

"Waitarere residents urged to check their properties" Police are now able to formally name boy whose body which was located at Waitarere Beach on Thursday afternoon. He was Alex Fisher, aged 10 from Levin. A large Police investigation - Operation Waitarere - involving staff from throughout the North Island is working through the weekend. “We’ve received a reasonable response to the 0800 number we’ve set up and we encourage anyone who has not yet contacted us with information to do so,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong. “There may still be sightings of Alex or his brother Eric around Waitarere, or the forest and beach area, that we’re not yet aware of,” “If you are not sure about what you might have seen please contact us anyway and let Police make that judgement. “If you are returning to your property in Waitarere this weekend please check for anything unusual or signs of disturbance, or any items missing.” said Mr Forlong. The number is 0800 234 7437. It will be answered from 9am-6pm over the weekend and a message can be left outside these hours. A post-mortem examination was completed yesterday, and Police can now say that this revealed head trauma to Alex. No further information will be given on this, and the actual cause of death is a matter for the Coronial process to establish. END Media please note that we are receiving a number of media calls based on wholly innacurate rumour and speculation. We ask that appropriate judgement is applied, and that checks are made with Police particulalry if these rumours involve graphic detail which could add to the distress of the family. For planning purposes media are advised that Police are considering a stand-up regarding the investigation at 4pm in Waitarere tomorrow (Sunday). This will be confirmed on Sunday morning. Issued by: Grant Ogilvie 021 191 0005 You can also view this release, including any additional images, online at: www.police.govt.nz/news/release/waitarere-residents-urged-check-their-propertiesThanks, New Zealand Police
